TIPS FOR WRITING TESTS

1.  Be prepared (see IMPROVING YOUR STUDY SKILLS).
2.  Ensure you have all the materials you will need for writing the test.
3.  Arrive early for the test.
4.  Before the test, get some fresh air and/or exercise.
5.  Whenever you get tests back, always ensure you understand anything
you have done wrong.  Make an appointment to see your teacher to
review any test questions that you didn't understand.  Keep past tests
and the correct answers for future reference.  Examine your results on
specific types of questions and determine which type of question
(for example:  multiple choice or essay) you have difficulty answering.
After identifying the type of question you have the most difficulty with,
seek help from your teachers, student advisors, guidance,
student services or learning resource centers.
6.  If you have trouble with stress on exams, learn some relaxation
techniques (see TIPS FOR DEALING WITH THE STRESS OF TESTS).
7.  In looking at the test, set some time guidelines for answering the
various parts of the test.  Start with the questions you are able to
answer the best, but keep to strict timelines for answering these
questions so you don't find yourself short of time when you are
facing your most difficult test questions.
8.  When answering objective questions (such as multiple choice),
first eliminate those answers you know are wrong, or are likely to
be wrong.  With essay/subjective questions, briefly outline
your answer and the order of your points, and think of a
specific example to illustrate each of your points.
9.  When you have finished the exam, resist the urge to leave.
First, review your test to ensure that you have answered all questions.
Ensure that your name (and student number if required) is
listed on all the appropriate pages.  Proofread your writing for
spelling, grammar, punctuation, etc.
10.  Once you leave the exam, do something enjoyable for yourself.
It the exam is only one of several that you will be writing, it is
important after each exam that you relax before you need to study again.
Remember, that exercise is a great way to deal with stress.
